Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa received the relics of Buddha (bone fragments excavated in Kapilavastu and considered sacred by Buddhists) These relics of Buddha, which are known to the world as the ‘Kapilavastu relics’, are from a site in Bihar first discovered in 1898, which is believed to be the ancient city of Kapilavastu. This epoch-making discovery was at a stupa site, Piprahwa. The relic casket discovered in 1898 bore the inscription.

The Sacred Kapilavastu relics, housed in the National Museum of India, were brought to Sri Lanka for a second time on 19 August, 2012. The exposition travelled across cities and provinces, covering most of Sri Lanka and drawing throngs of Buddhist devotees

After a final display at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, the Sacred Relics were returned to India on a special SriLankan flight, which departed to Delhi delegation of Buddhist priests, local officials including the Minister of Culture and the Arts, T.B. Ekanayake and Secretary to the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs, and officials from the National Museum of India.

Mr. Buddhika Sanjeewa - the Coordinating Officer to His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka, was assigned by Sri Lanka Government as the official Media Coordinating Officer of this historically event. The photographs show his paid homage to the Sacred Kapilavastu Relics boarded on special charter flight to the chanting of Pirith. He also participated brought to Sri Lanka and back to Delhi, India for handed over.

Sri Lankan Airlines Chairman Nishantha Wickramasinghe; Minister of Economic Development Basil Rajapaksa; Minister of Civil Aviation Priyankara Jayarathne; Speaker of the Parliament Chamal Rajapaksa and Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa were present at the airport.

A delegation from India led by Union Minister of Culture, Kumari Selja, accompanied the relics. High Commissioner Prasad Kariyawasam and the staff at the Sri Lanka High Commission in India attended the event.
